Why does a machine reject packaging?
Reverse vending machines read a barcode or a deposit mark on the label. If the machine cannot read it, or cannot physically move the packaging inside, it rejects the item. That does not always mean the packaging is not covered by the deposit system.
- Unreadable label, for example wet, torn, faded or covered with tape.
- Packaging is too crushed, so the machine cannot scan or transport it.
- No deposit mark, meaning the packaging is not covered by the system.
- Full machine, a common reason at busy stores.
- Technical fault with the scanner or internal mechanism.
- Unsupported packaging type, because some machines accept only selected materials.
What to do step by step
- Check the label. Make sure the deposit mark is visible and readable. Dry the label if it is wet, and press it back onto the bottle if it is peeling off.
- Reshape the packaging. A PET bottle does not need to look new, but it should be roughly cylindrical so the machine can move it.
- Try a different orientation. Some machines are picky. Rotate the can or insert the bottle bottom-first.
- Ask store staff. If the machine still refuses it, customer service may accept the packaging manually, especially in shops over 200 m².
- Use another return point. You can return eligible packaging anywhere in Poland that accepts that packaging type.
Remember: you do not need to return the packaging to the store where you bought it, and a receipt is not required.
How can you check whether a machine is working?
Before carrying a bag of bottles to a shop, it helps to know whether the machine is working. Full or broken machines are one of the most common frustrations in the deposit return system.
Zakaucjowani shows return points in Poland together with community-updated statuses. Users report whether a machine is working, full or temporarily unavailable.

What if the machine is full?
A full machine cannot accept more packaging. You can ask staff to empty it or accept returns manually, come back later, or choose another nearby return point.
What if the packaging really has no deposit?
Some older products still have no deposit mark. If there is no mark on the label, the shop does not have to accept it or pay a deposit. In that case the machine is not wrong: the packaging is simply outside the system.
Tip: if you are unsure, scan the label in Zakaucjowani. The app will help you check whether the packaging is covered.
Summary
- A machine may reject packaging because of the label, shape, a fault or a full container.
- Dry the label and gently reshape PET bottles before trying again.
- If the machine is unavailable, staff may be able to accept returns manually.
- You can use another return point and you do not need a receipt.
