The 200 m² rule
Polish deposit-return law divides shops by sales area. The threshold is 200 m²: above that size, lawmakers assume a shop has the space and logistics to take part in the full collection system.
In practice, large supermarkets and grocery stores have to accept covered packaging. Small local shops may not have the same obligation.
Who has to accept returns?
Shops over 200 m²: mandatory
They must accept all packaging covered by the system: PET bottles, metal cans and reusable glass bottles with the deposit mark, regardless of whether the shop sells that exact product.
Shops up to 200 m²: voluntary or limited
They can participate, but they do not have to accept everything. If they join, they may limit collection to packaging from products in their own range.
Glass-bottle exception: any shop that sells drinks in reusable glass bottles with a deposit mark must participate in collecting those bottles, regardless of shop size.
What does that mean in real life?
If you go to a large supermarket such as Biedronka, Lidl, Kaufland, Carrefour or Auchan, covered packaging should be accepted. A shop over 200 m² cannot simply say it does not take deposit packaging if the bottle or can has the required marking.
A small neighbourhood shop is different. It may join the system voluntarily, but if it has not joined, it usually does not have to accept all returns, even if it sells drinks with a deposit.
How do you know whether a small shop accepts returns?
Participating shops should be marked, usually with a sticker or sign near the entrance or checkout. You can also ask staff directly.
Zakaucjowani shows return points across Poland, including both machines and staffed return points. Community status updates help you avoid places that are temporarily not accepting packaging.

What if a shop refuses?
If you are in a shop over 200 m² and staff say returns are not accepted, try the following:
- Ask for customer service or the store manager and mention the obligation under the deposit return system.
- Check whether the issue is a full or broken reverse vending machine rather than store policy.
- Use another nearby return point. You are not tied to one chain or one purchase location.
Important: if a shop over 200 m² has a full or broken machine, staff should still be able to handle eligible packaging manually.
Do I have to return packaging to the shop where I bought it?
No. You can return covered packaging at any return point in Poland that accepts that type of packaging. A receipt is not required. What matters is the deposit mark on the label.
Summary
- Shops over 200 m² must accept all deposit packaging.
- Smaller shops can join voluntarily and may collect only selected packaging.
- Reusable glass bottles are a special case if the shop sells them.
- You can return packaging at any suitable return point, without a receipt.
